The August 4th Snake Avoidance Training has been canceled. Please contact Sami if you are interested in future sessions.
Offered to all immunized dogs 5 months old and older.
This 1.5 hour workshop and training session creates a dog who will avoid snakes at every opportunity. We use both live bull snakes and reanimated (dead) rattlesnakes in order to first test each dog on their reaction to snakes and then teach the dog that snakes are to be avoided. No snakes are harmed in this workshop. Bull snakes are released after the class and the reanimated rattlesnakes are fresh road kill we have found. We do use an E-collar (electronic) on the dogs in parts two and four of the work shop.
Part One: Informational lecture about our native snakes, effectiveness of snake vaccines, antivenin, and what to do if you or your pet is bitten.
Part Two: Individual dogs are tested with the live Bull snake to see how they will react to snakes (some dogs naturally avoid snakes and no further training is required).
Part Three: Dogs who are curious or non-reactive to snakes take part in our snake training practicum where they are taught to avoid snakes when they see or hear them.
Part Four: Teach the dogs to "leave it".
Format: Small groups of dogs (3 to 5) are taken through the course one at a time for training. Afraid of Snakes? The owner of the dog does not have to participate. A staff member can take the dog through the workshop for a fee ($15 additional).
